New to the Explorers Hotel: pancakes are now being served at the Point Gourmand an excellent option for tasty treat after an intensive day of action in the parks. Our yummy pancakes (crêpes in French) are waiting for you to try them!

Crêpes and pancakes – a delicious history

The 17^th of February, this up and coming Tuesday, is Pancake Day or as it is traditionally known Shrove Tuesday. You are probably looking forward to filling your tummy’s up with delicious crêpes and pancakes, but do you know where the tradition of having a whole day dedicated to pancakes originally come from?

The tradition spans back to the Anglo-Saxon Christians who during the period of Lent were not allowed to eat butter, milk and eggs. They would use Shrove Tuesday to use up all of these items before starting their fast for lent to ensure that there would be no waste and products going bad during this period. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter was traditionally a time of fasting. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9.

These days many people choose to celebrate Pancake Day by eating pancakes for breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all 3!) and the celebrations are decidedly non-religious for most from pancake tossing competitions, to pancake races.
